Thank you so much for sharing our wedding day with us! This day has been a long time in coming and we are thrilled you are a part of it. It is a day of love and celebration with many, many personal details.
Back in September of 2012 Blake came for a visit to Ontario, his first trip home since relocating in 1998. We spent a day together revisiting a lot of places of our youth that held significance, and one of those was the former First (Delta) Baptist building, where we met as children, which is now the Cambridge Community Players theatre. Pretty sure it was Jenn who voiced the thought that should we every marry, wouldn’t this be a great place to do it? Fast forward just over four years and we approached the theatre, explained our connection to the place, and asked if they would allow us to be married in the courtyard. They approved and we are the first to ever be married there. The courtyard has been built up over the years to accommodate the needs of the patrons, but we have wonderful memories of DVBS in the summers of our childhood (well, mostly Jenn) and later during our teens of playing games with the younger kids during DVBS and cold dark mornings raising the flag during Kamp-In. Jenn was dedicated as an infant in this building, baptized here as a teen, and now will complete the trifecta and be married.
Marrying us today is Victor Lujetic, senior pastor of King Street Baptist Church and long-time friend of the Millar family. King Street has been the home church for Jenn’s parents for many, many years, but also is the church were Blake’s Mom, Elspeth, grew up and where Blake’s parents were married in 1963. When we hosted Jenn’s mother’s 80th birthday party at King Street, the key we borrowed to get in and out was still attached to a handmade leather tag bearing the name of Blake’s maternal grandfather—the ties run that deep. Though Victor’s time at King Street began after the passing of Blake’s grandparents, he has heard many a story of Blake and Elsie Drinkwater who lived across the street and were such a core part of the church in so many respects for many, many years. When pondering who could marry us in Cambridge, he was the first person we thought of, and we are very happy he agreed.
The music today is being performed by a cello and violin duo, a combination of classical and old hymns. The hymns were chosen carefully and are favourites of our two parents that could not be with us today, Jenn’s father, Rod, and Blake’s mother, Elspeth.
We have been blessed with the love and support of our families, and today we are honoured by our youngest children who are ‘walking us down the aisle’. Grace accompanies Blake while Jacob and Joshua are lending an arm each to Jenn. And who better than Jenn’s mom, Alice, and Blake’s dad, Sandy, to act as our witnesses and sign the official paperwork, as they too have waited a long time for this day.
The Galt View restaurant was an easy and logical choice for our reception. I don’t think either of us remembers there not being a Galt View restaurant on Coronation Boulevard. It centres fondly in our memories, having been a place of many family gatherings, Sunday lunches, and early morning breakfasts for generations in each of our families.
So while our in-person numbers have been kept small, we hope that by reading our story and details of our wedding day that you feel welcomed and included. Drop us a note on the Your Words page, and please come back after the wedding as we will be posting pictures taken throughout the day as well as a video of the ceremony.
